The Maine Public Employees Retirement System is seeking a Disability Specialist. The position consists of administrative work in evaluating eligibility for disability benefits within the fiduciary responsibility of the System.  Tasks include the following:  reviewing and analyzing medical reports and employment histories; eliciting relevant information from applicants/recipients and employers; presenting facts and consulting with the Medical Board to interpret the information and identify the functional limitations of the specific conditions; acts as designee to the Executive Director regarding eligibility and continuing eligibility for disability benefits.  Specific projects and areas of concentration are assigned as needed.


Minimum Qualifications:  Qualified applicants must have a bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of progressively responsible administrative experience–OR- associate’s degree in a relevant field and five years of complex administrative or technical experience.   At least one (1) year of experience must be in the application of complex laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Demonstrate strong analytical thinking and writing skills.

Must have interpersonal skills to deal effectively with diverse populations including physically and mentally incapacitated persons.

Must be skilled in operating word processing and other office automation equipment and be capable of extended periods of time engaged in computer terminal operations.


Additional Desired Qualifications:  Experience which demonstrates interviewing and other skills necessary to evaluate medical reports and related data to make complex determinations of eligibility for benefits or services. Experience relating to disability determination or vocational rehabilitation.
