Eligibility
In order to qualify for a disability benefit a member must demonstrate:
- One or more medically diagnosable conditions exists;
- Functional limitations caused by the conditions make the member unable to perform the essential functions of the member’s employment position with reasonable accommodation; and
- The inability can be expected to be permanent.
Also, the incapacity must have existed as of the member’s last date of service in their MainePERS covered employment position.
Note: If a member does not have 5 years of continuous creditable service in MainePERS covered employment, they may not be eligible for disability retirement if the condition(s) existed prior to beginning MainePERS covered employment
A member who believes they meet these criteria and is interested in exploring Disability Retirement may call MainePERS at (207) 512-3100 to discuss filing an application.
